If you don’t know the North Yorkshire Moors you are in for a treat! They are one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of the country, almost wholly contained in a National Park. The moors themselves contain breath-taking scenery and are laced with dales containing pretty villages. On the eastern edge is a dramatic coastline with historic Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. To the south are lovely market towns, including Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering. The roads are quiet and I can think of nowhere I would rather drive ‘our cars’. We will be based at the Feathers Hotel in the centre of Helmsley, one of the prettiest market towns in Yorkshire, for five nights.
We arrive on Sunday and will have time to look around Helmsley itself. We will have our own dedicated car-park at the hotel. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday there will be a choice of scenic circular drives taking in various of the area’s attractions. The maximum distance covered in a day is under 100 miles and some of the tours will be little more than half this. We leave Helmsley on Friday morning.
Some of the high-lights on our tour routes are:
- Market towns of Helmsley, Pickering (including its church with glorious wall paintings) and Malton.
- The ancient port of Whitby and fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay.
- Moorland villages including Goathland (Heartbeat’s Aidensfield), Hutton le Hole and Lastingham.
- Eden Camp (WWII) museum and Ryedale Folk Museum.
- Rievaulx Abbey and Nunnington House (NT).
- The North Yorks Moors Railway (running from Pickering to Whitby).
This is intended to be a thoroughly relaxing holiday: you will receive a comprehensive route book with recommendations for coffee and lunch stops and notes on what you will see on each of the tours. Do as much or as little as you like. We have an experienced and knowledgeable local guide who will make recommendations to cater for your particular interests.
We have negotiated a special rate at the Feathers Hotel: £60pppn, for dinner, bed and breakfast, based on double occupancy of a room; single occupancy is £85pppn. The tour entry fee is £15 per car, to cover the cost of the rally pack.
Make a note of the dates now, and booking instructions will be issued soon!
