This year the National Rally is a two-day event and we hope that you will join us for the weekend, in Lincolnshire. The Committee decided a few years ago that we should hold the rally around the Midlands; ‘North’ one year and ‘South’ the next. 2017 is a ‘North’ year but we have chosen the location to be easily accessible from the South and we hope that members from all over the UK and abroad, will join us. We believe that having a two-day programme makes it worthwhile travelling from further afield and that you will see this as an opportunity for a mini-break, staying in the area from Friday afternoon through till Monday.
Lincolnshire was home to many of Bomber Command’s air-fields during the Second World War and the area is rich in aviation heritage. This is our theme for Saturday and if you join us for the weekend we will immerse you in nostalgia.
On Saturday morning, we will go to the Kinema-in-the-Woods at Woodhall Spa. This historic site was one of the first cinemas in Britain, opening in 1922, when it showed silent films. It has been preserved and with its Compton cinema organ faithfully recreates the experience of early cinema. We will have a programme of historic newsreels and live music to set the scene for the remainder of the day.
After the Kinema experience we will drive a short distance to the delightful Petwood Hotel. The Petwood was the Officers Mess for 617 Squadron (the Dambusters) and contains much Dambusters memorabilia. Here you can have coffee, a bar-snack or full lunch.
From here it is a short drive to Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, the Lincolnshire Memorial to Bomber Command, where we will see the newly-restored Lancaster Bomber and other attractions. We have arranged to take our cars onto the airfield, to park next to the Control Tower.
If our ‘aviation heritage’ theme is not to your taste, the City of Lincoln is nearby, as are interesting National Trust properties.
Sunday sees the traditional static rally at Belton House, near Grantham. This is one of the National Trust’s gems, often cited as the perfect example of an English country house. Built for Sir John Brownlow in the 1680s, Belton House has all the design features of a classic English country home. Sitting in formal Italian and Dutch gardens and an historic 1300 acre deer park, Belton is often cited as the quintessential country house estate. Dogs are welcome on leads in the stableyard and parkland. There is a restaurant on site, plus the National Trust Shop and bookshop.
We will park our cars in front of the house in the deer-park between 9:30am and 5:00pm, and we hope to have over 80 cars in attendance, especially welcoming visitors with Wolseleys who are members of other clubs. 2017 brings several notable anniversaries: 90 years since William Morris bought Wolseley; 80 years since the first Series III cars; 60 years since the launch of the 1500 and fifty years since the launch of the FWD 18/85.
The rally entry fee includes admission for all rally participants to the house and grounds of Belton House on Sunday. National Trust members are reminded to bring their National Trust membership cards with them for scanning by the NT staff.
The final event of the rally will be a meal at Belton Woods Hotel, which is just a stone’s throw from the rally field. We will have our own private room and bar. The meal has three courses plus coffee, with each course having several options available to choose from on the evening.
We do hope that most Members will take part in both days but, of course, it is possible to come for Sunday only.
Members are invited to choose and book their own accommodation for the weekend. An extensive list of options for accommodation both in the Woodhall Spa and in the Grantham areas can be see by clicking here.
