Dear wise old Wolseley owls.
Can you help with a three part problem? Did the 18/80 have a cable-pull type starter arrangement? If it did what are the chance of a Series II 21/25 hp starter fitting an 18/80? Thirdly, I am fairly sure that the Series II cars had a wet-type clutch. Did the starter motor have to make an oil-tight seal to the flywheel housing and, if so, how was this achieved?
I look forward to your answers.

Hi Tom. Sorry Chris,
As the 14/56 had a cable operated starter I assume the 18/80 was the same. A Super Six starter is too big for the smaller engines and as far as the oil tight seal goes I think that a paper gasket was used between the clutch housing and engine and so the starter would use that as a seal.
Jerry. Or is it Graham.

Graham.
In which way do you mean “too big”? Is the motor too long or is it the diameter which makes the starter unsuitable? I’ve sent a template of the flange on the flywheel end of the starter to Rob which gives the position of the raised lip that locates the starter in the flywheel housing along with the bolt positions.I hope this will be enough for him to decide as to suitability as to the diameter but could the length still throw up an issue?

Chris if I’m correct the Series 11 and 111 cars use the same size starter for 14hp and 18hp and the diameter is 41/8″. The the diameter of the one used on the Super Six is 3/8″ larger @ 41/2″.

Graham.
I think you should change your name to Wolseleypedia! The starter is indeed a M45AL and, if I remember rightly from my days at Lucas, the “45” refers to 4 1/2″ diameter. If you’re right then Lucas must have also made a M4125 starter which is not a size I’m familiar with but I’m fairly sure I remember a M425. Could you be 1/82 out (perish the thought)?

I don’t know about being out by 1/82″ Chris but it’s quite possible, however I hope that what I have said helps to resolve the matter.

You were right Graham. The chap who wanted the starter for his 18/80 restoration has received the template I made and he tells me that the interior diameter is fine but the outer diameter is too large and the lugs are in the wrong place. Starter still for sale then.
