The gearbox and overdrive on my car have been comprehensively rebuilt recently, but I cannot get the latter to engage, although there is an impression that it is trying so to do. A video of the rebuild is available on Youtube, but it’s like Greek to me. Is the problem likely to be electrical or mechanical? Any suggestions?

Hi Dick,
Check out the electrics first.
Post exactly how you are operating the overdrive, what you are doing and at what speeds you are doing it.
There is a governor and a solenoid on the unit and a kickdown switch and (if I remember correctly) a switch operated by the throttle linkage that operates to engage it if the throttle is closed when the speed exeeds 32mph. with the operating cable pushed in. Below 28mph with the cable pushed in the overdrive drops out and the car freewheels. The drive always needs to be taken up before the cable is pulled out again and if the overdrive is engaged 32mph the kickdown must be operated to disengage it before the cable is pulled out. You may well know all this and if so I’m sorry to repeat it.
Also you say that it is trying to engage what gives you that impression.
Hopefully we can get to the bottom of the problem for. It’s some 45 years since I’ve had mine so my memory may be a bit sketchy.
Graham.

Many thanks, Graham-that info is comprehensive and most useful. Given the car’s mpg, an operational o/d on a long journey would come in useful. I’ll keep you posted. Kind Regards, Dick.

You’re welcome Dick, I hope it’s something simple.
I should have also mentioned that the drive should always be taken up before pushing the ovedrive handle in rather than when coasting or on the overrun.
Graham.
