I have just been asked by a friend if I know of anywhere he can buy an aerosol tin of touch-up paint in Connaught Green for his 4/44. I have contacted Ketts Autopaint who tell me that they can supply a tin of non=cellulose paint that will not react but may have a deeper shine than the original paint. Does anyone know if I can recommend this paint to him, whether there will be any adverse chemical reaction and whether the area painted will stick out like a sore thumb afterwards and result in spraying larger and larger areas to try and hide the repair.
Regards.

Hi Chris
I would be very wary of using a different paint type. The odds are that the new paint is two pack, which is likely to look quite different when patched onto old cellulose paintwork. In addition, if the car still has its original paint finish, it is quite likely that the colour will have faded over the years, making the new paint even more obvious.
There are companies that still supply cellulose paint, although I don’t know how you would specifically get Connaught Green, perhaps some would be able to make the colour up for you? However, if you do decide to try the new paint, I would recommend that you trial some on a spare bit of metal first. You can then compare the two finishes.

Hi Bob.
I am sure that the paint that Ketts are offering will be two pack and they admit that the finish will be different. Connaught green still has an ICI paint code which should make matching it easier without having to take a sample from the car to colour match. Do you have contact details for one of the companies that supply cellulose paint preferably in aerosol form?

Hi Chris
Although I have not personally used ‘Ken & Lyn’ myself, they do advertise in CMM every month. I have just rung them to find out what they can do, and their current advice and costs are as follows:
A straight formula cellulose aerosol in Connaught Green can be produced at at cost of £12 (plus £4 postage). Although the colour will be a correct match to the original Connaught Green formula, they cannot guarantee that it will still match the paint on the car as it is today.
Therefore they strongly advise that you send them a sample of paint from the car, preferably about postcard size, so perhaps a petrol filler cap, door or bonnet hinge. etc. They will then guarantee to produce the colour to match that sample. BUT then the minimum quantity that can be produce is 1 litre. This would cost £30 plus £8 postage. In addition, they can then decant lots of 125ml from this 1 litre into aerosol cans at an extra cost of £5 per aerosol.
Their phone number is 01298 814813, should you wish to discuss it with them any further.
Hope this helps

Dear Bob.
That reply is just what I wanted and is absolutely brilliant. I shall copy all the details and send them over to Brian so he can make his own decision about whether to buy Connaught Green off the shelf or have some made up by colour matching.
Once again thank you on behalf of Brian (a Register member with a 4/44)
