I’m fabricating new or repairing the running-board outriggers on my 1948 Series III 12/48. It is difficult to measure accurately the thickness of the original steel. My best estimate is 2mm, or 14 SWG in old money. I also need to repair some of the steel cladding over the plywood panels on the edge of the chassis rails behind the doors. This is pretty thin and non-structural. My best guess for this would be 0.8 mm or 22 SWG. Can anyone offer a more informed view? Any information on the gauges of steel used throughout would be welcome because I am pretty sure that the story will not end here.
Many thanks,
Dale.

Hi Dale
Glad to hear that you are now progressing with your car!

I made new outriggers for my 14/60, (which are the same as your 12/48), to the same pattern and dimensions as the originals, and I used 14 guage for mine. Partly because I was sure that the original metal was 14 gauge but also because I could not form the outriggers using 16 guage – it was too tough!

And again, I also used 22 guage for side panels below the door. As you say, the metal here is just a skin over the wooden stip that hides the chassis rails. For repairs to the majority of main panels, (eg the wings), I used 18 guage.

Hope this helps
Regards
Bob

Thanks Bob, that was exactly what I wanted to hear.
Progress has been fairly slow so far as it has been too good a summer to spend inside the garage, but the plan, most probably wildly optimistic, is to get the car useable by next summer. The caveat is that ‘useable’ does not extend to full refurbishment of the interior, but the dogs have pretty low expectations about their accommodation. The good news is that as I strip things back, I’m not finding any serious horrors.
I’m really looking forward to getting it on the road.
Very best wishes,
Dale

That is good news Dale. My oen car is due to be on the road again (but not perfect), by the end of this year. If you want to compare any measurements or discuss any other queries, you know where to find me!

Regards
Bob
