Hi,
I am trying to move the starter motor from my 1500 as I believe its faulty. I removed a bolt from the top of the case and a nut from the bottom there is still a bolt on the underside but it is loose the only reason it isn’t falling out is the component behind it its stopping the head of the bolt going right back. As far as I know from the original manual there are only two bolts and a light tap with a mallet should persuade the starter to come away. Can anyone advise me as to where I am going wrong ?

Hello Alex,
Originally there were two 3/8 bsw bots and that secured the starter motor. They went through the engine back plate and were threaded into the gearbox bell housing the starter motor has a register of approx 3mm locating into the back plate. Usually with the two bolts and the wire removed the motor would fall forward of the register and fall free of the hole. It sounds like a stud has been inserted at some point and is denying you the required wiggle room to clear the Bendix drive around the edge of the flywheel. The motor needs to come forward and off it’s register to allow greater movement. Try to move the brush end of the motor towards the block to move the Bendix away from the flywheel pulling it to the front of the car. There were some changes to the bell housing early cars had an open Bendix to the elements later cars had a steel cup enclosing the open end neither of these should affect the procedures listed. Hope the information helps
