Hi
I have drained the oil from the gearbox (car has been stored for 30 years) and half of (what I think is) a thrust washer fell out. It is badly damaged.

Can anyone advise where I could get a replacement. I haven’t taken the gearbox off the car yet but presume it will have to come off to replace this part?

Thank you for any advice
Deane

Hi Deane

That looks nasty…… You could try Vintage and Classic Transmissions (http://www.spanglefish.com/vin…../index.asp). He knows the larger Series gearboxes very well, and even if he has no direct experience of the Eight, he may well be able to point you in the right direction. He is listed on our Recommended Traders list and he also gives discounts to Register members – see the appropriate pages under the main ‘Spares & Repair’ website heading.

Good Luck!
Bob

Hi Deane,
I am sure the Morris Eight Series E gearbox is the same.
There are a couple on Ebay at the moment

As mentioned above, the 1939 to 1948 Morris Eight Series E gearbox is identical and will drop straight in. The gearbox is relatively easy to overhaul, the procedure is covered in the Morris Motors Eight Series E Workshop Manual – copies often turn up on eBay – in fact there’s one on eBay at the moment for £19.99

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THE-MORRIS-EIGHT-Series-E-WORKSHOP-MANUAL/312248678378?hash=item48b378b7ea:g:kmsAAOSwUrlbWHEX

Whilst new bearings are readily available for the gearbox, other gearbox parts such as your thrust washer are not and may mean cannibalising another box to get the parts you need for yours.

You could try contacting John E Evans Classic Car Transmissions of Hayling Island – Tel: 023 9246 5256 – I believe he rebuilds Morris Series MM Minor gearboxes which are internally the same as an Eight Series E box.
